Lab Ball Mills & Planetary Ball Mills

Ball mills reduce particle size through impact and attrition as grinding media tumble inside a closed jar. The three POWTEQ laboratory ball mill types differ in how the jar moves. Planetary ball mills counter-rotate jars on a sun wheel, generating high centrifugal forces for the finest grinding down to 0.1 µm. Mixer mills oscillate the jar at high frequency for fast pulverising of small samples. 3D mixer mills move the container on three axes for gentle, homogeneous blending. All three handle dry, wet, and cryogenic grinding.

Lab Cutting Mills & Crushers

A lab cutting mill reduces soft, elastic, and fibrous materials by shearing. Rotating knives cut against fixed bars, and an interchangeable bottom sieve controls the final particle size. Cutting mills handle the samples ball mills cannot, including polymers, textiles, feeds, and tissue. For brittle or heat-sensitive materials, the centrifugal fast mill and jaw crusher complete the pre-crushing chain.

Recommended Mills by Sample Type

Hard, brittle materials grind down cleanly under the impact and friction of a ball mill, while fibrous and elastic samples need the shearing action of a cutting mill. Three factors narrow it down:

• Material: Including hardness, brittleness, and heat sensitivity
• Batch size: From a few grams of tissue to bulk pre-crushing
• Target fineness: From millimetre range to sub-micron and nanometre scale

Sample type Recommended mill Max feed size Fineness
Hard to brittle, ground to sub-micron or nanometre scale <10 mm <0.1 µm
Small samples such as tissue, plant material, chemical compounds (dry, wet, or frozen) <10 mm <5 µm (down to <100 nm)
Small volumes needing homogeneous, contamination-free blending 2 L volume n/a (mixing)
Soft, fibrous, elastic materials such as polymers, textiles, feeds <25 mm 0.1–20 mm
Soft to medium-hard, heat-sensitive samples (cryogenic option) <10 mm <40 µm
Hard, tough materials for coarse pre-crushing such as rocks, ores, ceramics <90 mm <2 mm
Medium-hard, brittle samples to analytical fineness for spectral analysis <15 mm <75 µm
Pasty or brittle samples such as pills, grains, soil, glass <10 mm <5 µm

Why GRS for Milling, Cutting & Mixing

Frequently Asked Questions

A ball mill is used to grind, blend, and homogenise solid samples into fine or ultrafine powder. Laboratories use ball mills to prepare samples for chemical analysis, materials research, pharmaceutical development, ceramics, and battery R&D. In Singapore, GRS supplies POWTEQ laboratory ball mills covering planetary, mixer, and 3D mixing types for all of these applications.

A standard ball mill rotates a jar around a single axis, so grinding balls tumble and crush the material inside. A planetary ball mill counter-rotates the jars on a spinning sun wheel, generating much higher centrifugal forces. The result is faster grinding cycles and finer output, reaching below 0.1 µm on the POWTEQ BM40 and BM6Pro, where a conventional jar mill typically stops at the micron range.
Use a cutting mill when your sample is soft, elastic, or fibrous. Materials such as polymers, textiles, rubber, feeds, and tissue smear or clog under the impact forces inside a ball mill, while the shearing action of rotating knives in a cutting mill such as the POWTEQ CM 100 reduces them cleanly. Hard, brittle samples that need micron or sub-micron fineness belong in a ball mill instead.
Lab ball mill pricing in Singapore depends on the mill type, jar capacity, and controller options. Planetary ball mills sit higher than mixer mills because of their energy input and fineness range. GRS provides configured quotations within 24 hours, and supports institutional procurement through GEBIZ and Ariba for universities, research institutes, and government laboratories.
Yes. Every POWTEQ mill supplied by GRS is installed and commissioned by our factory-trained engineers in Singapore, with operator training included. Spare parts, calibration, and repairs are handled locally by our in-house team, so equipment never needs to be shipped overseas for support.
